Dune (2021), directed by Denis Villeneuve, is based on the first book of Frank Herbert's science fiction classic novel series. The film takes place in the distant future and humanity has spread to different planets of the universe.
The story is shaped around the Atreides Dynasty, which takes control of the desert planet Arrakis, where the universe's most valuable substance, "spice", is produced. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a young leader candidate, moves to Arrakis with his family. However, he faces betrayal from the powerful Harkonnen family and other political forces.
As Paul learns the responsibilities of leadership he has inherited, he finds an ally among the desert people called Fremen, along with his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). At the same time, he is torn between a mysterious young girl (Chani - Zendaya) whom he frequently sees in his dreams and prophecies that he may be the "chosen one". The film presents the harsh conditions of Arrakis, the giant sandworms and the atmosphere of political intrigue with impressive visuals and music.
Viewers were amazed by the film, especially thanks to Hans Zimmer's unique music, magnificent visual effects and the performances of the cast. However, some viewers felt that the film was lacking because it only told the first part of the story. Dune has been considered one of the pinnacles of modern science fiction cinema with both its deep themes and epic narrative.
