In a Japan overrun by Kaiju creatures, Hibino Kafka works in the field of clearing monsters. When she meets her childhood friend and rising star of the Japanese Self-Defense Force, Ashiro Mina, Kafka decides to re-pursue her once abandoned dream: to join the Self-Defense Force. However, she suddenly transforms into a powerful Kaiju, "Kaiju No. 8". With the help of her young colleague Ichikawa Reno, Kafka tries to keep her identity secret and still achieve her life's goal: to pass the Self-Defense Force's selection process and fight alongside Mina. However, when a mysterious intelligent Kaiju attacks a Self-Defense Force base, Kafka is put in a situation where she must make an important decision.
