Norwegian Hans Nielsen Hauge experienced an extraordinary transformation that affected both his own life and all of Norway as a result of a deep spiritual experience he had at the age of 25. He started a new era for Norway by giving sermons, writing and publishing his own books, employing both the mentally and physically disabled, and elevating women as both preachers and business leaders. Hauge, who tried to spread this egalitarian message that was not welcomed by the state, was eventually subjected to pressure from the government. Although he paid a heavy price in the process, Hauge and those who followed him left an indelible mark on modern Norway.
