1923 tells the story of the Dutton family living during Prohibition and the Great Depression in the United States. The family patriarch Jacob and his wife Cara face difficulties such as historical drought and epidemics while managing their farm. Despite being the largest landowner, the family has difficulty finding feed for their animals due to the drought. At the same time, they are in constant conflict with other farmers in the region. The Dutton family is ready to do anything to protect their land. Cara is very determined about this and knows how to use a rifle. Their children Jack, John and the future Spencer also work intensively on the Dutton family's land.

The film shows its viewers the difficult conditions of the period and how the family copes with these conditions. In addition, the dynamics within the family and the relationships between the characters also attract the viewer's attention.

The film was shot in the American West, especially in Montana.
