Metamorphosis is a documentary in which filmmaker and media artist Pim Zwier chooses an original form to tell the story of the life and work of German artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). Merian's most important work was on the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies: she recorded this process with beautiful prints and engravings and was the first to draw insects together with the plant they lived on. Metamorphosis presents the discoveries and art of this interesting character in detail to the viewer. The effect of the film on the audience is that it offers the fascinating experience of visually following this transformation at the intersection of nature and science. The film was shot in Germany, the artist's home.
