Sugar Island tells the story of Makenya, a pregnant young girl of Dominican-Haitian descent living in Batey, a community surrounded by sugarcane fields. The mechanization of the sugar industry threatens to displace the workers. Makenya joins protests to defend the rights of the workers, and this process turns into her journey to adulthood. As Makenya's body expands, the final hand zafiri takes place, the harvest ends, and the cry of her baby heralds a new world. The film addresses the transformation Makenya goes through during this challenging process and the difficulties she encounters.
